Our Lady of Guadalupe...

Having spent the first 30-some years of my life in Wisconsin, I still can't get used to the idea of roses blooming in December. However, here we are on December 12, the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and her namesake rose still has blooms. This charming rose, which we've had for three or four years now, has bloomed repeatedly since last spring, but it is nothing short of miraculous to see the flowers at this time of year.

(Sorry the image is somewhat out of focus -- I was crouched over in the rain trying to get this picture.)

  2. I was just remarking to myself, here it's just about mid-December, and as I drive through Redwood City on my way to the gallery, there are roses blooming everywhere, and leaves are still on the trees!

  3. The few other roses I have gave up blooming two months ago. I thought it was so cool that the one named Our Lady of Guadalupe was the only one with blooms on Guadalupe Day!! Unfortunately, I didn't think to take a photo until I'd cut the best of the flowers to take to a Mexican friend who has a shrine to Guadalupe.

Guy, I think the rains this weekend are finally going to make it look like December -- there are a lot more leaves on the ground and the remaining flowers in my garden are all looking sad now.

  4. Where did you live in WI?

Roses are blooming in central FL too...and poinsettia and hibiscus and bougainvillea and my lovely new blue plumbago. Ya gotta love Florida for that!!!!

  5. Ginny, I lived in Madison for 18 years prior to moving to California.

Florida sounds like a year-round version of California when it comes to gardens, although I can't say I've seen pointsettia growing outdoors here.

  6. We just heard a sermon about Our Lady of Guadalupe Saturday at Mass. IF you would like to follow that miracle story try to do a search.

  7. Actually, here in Massachusetts our roses bloom until mid December if we don't have a real frost and they're in a sunny spot. However, MA isn't Wisconsin either!
