TOYS...

Fe Fi Faux Fowl
acrylic on canvas, 30" x 30"
Chris Beck

I got word over the weekend that this fun fellow will be flying east in a few weeks. He's been accepted for the show TOYS: Re-Invent, Re-Imagine, Re-Discover at the Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center in Solomons, MD (about 60 miles southeast of Washington, DC on Chesapeake Bay). The show runs from October 14, 2011 to January 8, 2012 and includes 62 works by 32 artists.

This painting was quite a departure for me -- both size and medium. I made a brief foray into the world of acrylic a few years ago but scurried back to watercolor with no regrets. I do like the oversize presentation here and the fact that it doesn't need to be framed under glass, but I prefer the process of painting in watercolor to that of acrylic.

  2. Another beauty. I love these tin toys you find. And congratulations on getting into the exhibition, sounds like a prestigious one.

Yes a big piece and different medium, but looks like it was no challenge for you. I have a love/hate relationship with acrylic and have more control with watercolour and oils usually. Its interesting to switch back and forth now and then, just to prove you can. :)

  3. Thanks, Jeanette! Glad you like it!! The finished painting is deceptive -- it was *such* a struggle to paint!! :-)

  4. Wow, just realized it was 30 x 30! It's a knock out! I agree with you about straying from watercolors, I always can't wait to get back.

  5. EX-CELL-ENT! The acrylic really reinforces the hard, tin nature of the object. WOW! You are on a roll, both with paintings and with shows - best of luck on all!!! (And I didn't know you could paint big - ha, ha).

  7. Congratulations!! It's a beauty - and a big beauty, too! I love the eye area on this - it's almost translucent :) Glad you won't be leaving watercolor, though.

  8. Actually, Rhonda, I've become even more focussed on watercolor in the past year and started divesting myself of some of the sidetracking stuff I've accumulated over the years.

  9. Chris, I must say that you've mastered acrylic, even if you prefer watercolor. I struggle so whenever I touch the acrylics.

Beautifully done and I am picturing how powerful this must be in the large format. Wonderful!

  11. Thanks, Mary and Michelle.

Yes, this is quite eye-catching as a large painting, Mary and I definitely understand the struggle with acrylics -- fiendish substance!!
